Egg rolls at Rainbow King come close

Ok I know it seems like the theme is asian, but it's not trust me. That just happens to be what I eat a lot of. I promise there will be variety.

Now we've already received a Chicago rating on one asian restaurant's dishes in Atlanta, GA from readers. Check out the list on the side to see who made the Chicago grade. I will have to check this place out myself to see if it keeps its ranking because I don't give out this grade too easily. We'll let it hold that spot for now though.

This particular post is to feature the egg rolls at a little place called Rainbow King right here in Wake Forest, NC. These egg rolls are the right size which is the best place to start. The flavor is close, but I can't quite give it a Chicago. I'm a little guarded with that distinction. The filling needs more meat. I got a mouthful of veggies which is fine if I'm eating a spring roll. I like to have meat in every bite of my egg rolls though. But these babies are definitely a 8. Everything else about them was good.

The rest of the dishes there don't fair as well. I'll start with the ugly and make my way up the list.

The fried rice actually falls way down on the scale and drops to a 2. It is more of a yellowish color and I can't taste any of the pan on it. I actually took the rice and refried it in my wok adding my own special blend of asian spices and soy sauce - lots of soy sauce. It was way better, but who wants to cook take out. That kind of defeats the purpose.

The green beans - ugh - withered with no crunch. rating 2.5

Inching a little over the rice and beans is the crab ragoon. Just a little edging though to receive a 3.5. They are chewy instead of crispy, but the filling actually had a spec of red giving me the hopes that there was really some crab in there.

The lo mein dish creeps up a bit and is edible but nowhere close to the top. I give it a 5.

The fried dumplings do even better as we climb the chart and give them a solid 7.

All in all on a percentage rating I shouldn't go back, but the egg rolls are enough to make the trip worth it.
